About the Artist:

Maria Lucía ‘Lulu’ Varona’s (b. 1993, San Juan, Puerto Rico) works address contemporary conditions as she visualizes landscapes and their hidden narratives through embroidery, each stitch telling a story and revealing banal curiosities that are commonly unnoticed in our daily lives. She started embroidering at the age of 10 after learning her techniques from her grandmother and her growing fascination with narrative art and comic books. She currently lives and works in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and has exhibited at Bronx Art Space, New York (2017) Roberto Paradise, San Juan (2017), Flux Factory, Brooklyn, NY (2019), MACO Feria de arte, Mexico City (2020), Embajada, San Juan (2020), amongst other spaces.
